Finding the Perfect Location
Location, location, location! It may sound cheesy, but location is one of the most important factors to consider when looking for a new home. Not sure if the rental you’re eyeing is in the ideal location for you? Ask yourself the following questions to find the right neighbourhood for you!
Can you really afford it?
It can be easy to get wooed by a trendy location, so set a budget before you begin looking. Factor in all your monthly expenses and the cost of deposits when deciding on your rent budget. Fees for parking, pets, laundry, and utilities will vary, so do your research and calculate all your expenses to avoid being blindsided later. Most importantly, be honest about what you can afford; moving to a pricey neighbourhood for the restaurants won’t be worth it if the rent leaves you on a mac and cheese budget.
How long is your commute?
Choosing a location close to work can give you hours back in your day and save you a lot of money in the long run. Do a test-drive from your new neighbourhood to work or use Google maps to calculate commute times. This will help you get an idea of how far work really is — and how long you can sleep in in the mornings. If you depend on transit, scope out the closest bus or train station and find out how long it takes to get to work.
Is the location safe?
Don’t rely on someone else to tell you if your new neighbourhood is safe. Visit the area at different times of the day and decide if there are any safety concerns, especially if you’ll be waiting at transit stations alone or walking a dog in the dark. This can also help you get an idea of noise levels and the chance to ask your potential neighbours how they feel about living in the area.
Can Fido come?
Finding pet-friendly rentals is no easy task, especially if you’re bringing a dog. Do your research on breed and size restrictions then decide if the location is the right choice for your furry friend. Are there dog parks nearby? Do you feel comfortable walking your dog in the neighbourhood? Do you need a doggy daycare? Where’s the nearest veterinarian? A quick online search will help you determine if the new location will keep both of you happy.
Does the neighbourhood suit your lifestyle?
Living in a neighbourhood that doesn’t suit your lifestyle won’t keep you happy for long. Are you a fitness nut? Find out if there’s a gym close to you. Life of the party? Living close to your favourite bars and restaurants could save you an arm and a leg on cab fare. Do you have children? Do your research on schools and daycares. Can you walk to the nearest grocery store, bank, or coffee shop? Take a look at your daily routine to determine which amenities you need nearby before committing to a lease.
