How to Prepare for Professional Movers
Moving is one of the most stressful events you will experience in life. If you have hired a team of professionals, this will help lessen the stress on you, both physically and mentally. Here are a few tips to make things go as smoothly as possible while lessening the strain on that hourly rate you will be paying:
Define ahead of time what your moving company will and will not move. A moving company will usually have a list of items that they will not move, including anything that could lead to serious disputes such as cash, pets and hazardous materials like flammable chemicals.
Obviously you will have to do some packing, but make sure you do so logically and with a schedule. Start as soon as you can, and begin in the rooms you use least such as a guest bedroom or bathroom.
Some moving companies supply boxes while others will do some packing for you; work with this in mind. It’s also best to find out what other services they offer and work around them. Use proper equipment and bubble wrap to avoid damages and find out if your moving company will be providing moving blankets to protect furniture from damage.
Make sure your moving company has insurance. As a homeowner, your insurance might also cover your move. It is best to look into this prior to the moving date. If you do not have moving insurance, make sure you get it because accidents can happen and items can be lost or damaged.
The more valuable your belongings, the more comprehensive the insurance you want. You can purchase insurance by the pound, which is more affordable, but also does not cover as much as comprehensive insurance which will address each specific item that is damaged.
Snacks and Water
Make sure you have some cold water and snacks to offer movers, especially in the summer. This is a nice gesture as they most likely have been lifting heavy objects and could use the break.
If you can afford it, have some cash on hand to offer a tip for the movers. Twenty dollars per person is a fair and appreciated amount for local moves and for long distance movers $100 per person is not uncommon.
These are some basic tips that will make your move go as smoothly as possible to lessen the stress on moving day.
