How to Simplify Post-Holiday Clean-Up
When your family and guests have sipped their last cocktails and are finally headed out for the night, you turn around and realize the mess that awaits you. The after-party mess is without a doubt the worst aspect of hosting a party. But, it doesn’t have to be! Being a host doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get to enjoy your own party or have to deal with the brutal aftermath, either. With a few simple steps, you can minimize the post-holiday damage and dive right into bed instead.
Here’s how to simplify for post-holiday clean-up:
Plan Out Your Garbage and Recycling Station
That’s right! The garbage and recycling for cans and bottles should have a convenient (but out of the way) station set up. This way you can easily direct guests to dump their garbage and cans in one spot rather than leaving them strewn across multiple surfaces. And make sure to at least double up on your bags. You don’t want to be left with a leaky mess!
Clean as You Go
When you can, clean a little bit as you go along throughout the party. It can save you a whole lot of time and aggravation in the end, but you don’t have to do it alone. There’s no harm in asking your best friend or sibling to keep on top of a section or two to help you throughout the night.
Have the Sink or Dishwasher Prepped
Before the party begins, make sure that your sink and/or dishwasher is clear and prepped for handling the dishes. That way, as they pile up, you can easily toss them into a soapy sink ready to be washed or load up the dishwasher quickly so you won’t be staring at piles of dishes later that night.
Repurpose Your Pots and Pans
When you’re preparing food, try to repurpose pots and pans. If you’ve used one pot to boil something, use the same one for cooking another item. Or, if you’re sautéing a veggie in one pan, throw in the other veggie to save you from having to wash another pan. There’s often no harm in sharing pots and pans – depending of course on what’s being cooked in them.
Being left with a mountain of dishes and a giant mess to tackle at the end of the night can be a big deterrent the next time you consider hosting a party. But it doesn’t have to be. With a few simple hacks, you can keep on top of that mess so that you can say goodbye to your guests and say hello to your comfy bed.
